Gregg D. Jacobs, Ph.D., insomnia specialist the UMass Memorial Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center, is pleased to announce the availability of a one day clinical training for clinicians who wish to develop proficiency in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Trainings are held twice per year (April and October). Please note that no CME/CEU credits are offered for this training.
Although insomnia affects 15-33% of the population, and CBT-I is now considered the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia, there is a dire shortage of clinicians with expertise in CBT-I due to a scarcity of training opportunities in this area.
This CBT-I clinical training is based on two decades of clinical practice at Harvard Medical School and the UMass Memorial Medical Center and extensive empirical research, including a federally funded study conducted at Harvard Medical School demonstrating that the same CBT protocol described in the CBT-I clinical training was more effective than Ambien. 1
This CBT-I clinical training includes a detailed, 200 page-training manual for use in clinical practice and covers:
- Empirical support for CBT-I
- Sleep and insomnia: basic concepts
- Sleep medications
- Assessment of insomnia patients
- Rationale for, and implementation of, CBT-I techniques including cognitive restructuring, sleep scheduling, stimulus control, relaxation, sleep hygiene, and sleep medication tapering
- Step-by-step 5 session treatment manuals for groups and individuals
- Fees and Billing Information
- Potential Clinical Issues
Testimonials from Dr. Jacobs’s recent CBT-I trainings:
"Highly recommended, incredibly well organized one day workshop. You will be fully equipped to seamlessly put this life changing protocol of CBT-I immediately into clinical practice. Dr. Jacobs purposely keeps the number of attendees at 10 or less, which greatly enhances the interactive learning experience. It's truly amazing how just one day out of my busy schedule to attend this workshop will dramatically change the health and quality of life for so many of my patients."
“This was a great course! Dr. Jacobs provided all the materials to allow for the immediate use of CBT for Insomnia in my practice. Everything was organized and easy to use, including marketing materials and necessary logs and other tools. The small class size facilitated discussion. I highly recommend it to anyone in clinical practice.”
"This workshop ranks very high in my experience, in the amount of useful information effectively presented in a concise format. It had just the right balance of technical instruction and review of supporting research. Dr. Jacobs provided a complete, efficient, well-organized training in a protocol that I can begin implementing in my practice immediately."
“I want to thank you for the day of training. I liked the format and structure and I particularly liked the small group format. This made for a very casual, yet personable experience. I would highly recommend it others. It's amazing to see how far the field of insomnia treatment has come. You've made a big contribution to the field. Thank you.”
"The one-day CBT-I training with Gregg Jacobs was excellent. It was well-structured and clear, and covered both theory and clinical application of this empirically sound and effective treatment. The knowledge and useful skills, as well as materials provided, exceeded my expectations, and will be of immediate benefit to me in my clinical practice. Highly recommended. I have already recommended this training to a couple of other clinicians."
“This was a great training. I am very excited to have this tool in primary care.”
"Even though I have done extensive reading about CBT-I including several treatment manuals, Dr. Jacob’s training workshop was tremendously helpful. He provided a detailed plan of what information to provide to patients and ways to present it so that patients will understand key concepts. I came to the workshop with many specific questions, all of which Dr. Jacobs answered. I now have all the tools I need to start a CBT-I program and a lot more confidence. I also liked the size of the training group which allowed us to have discussion. I think Dr. Jacobs gave us a lot for a very reasonable fee. It was well worth traveling from Indiana for the training."
“The training was terrific: packed with information, clearly presented, and accompanied by an invaluable packet of materials to help me launch my practice as an insomnia coach. Thanks so much!”
“This training was one of the most comprehensive and practical trainings I've ever attended. Dr. Jacobs was extremely generous in providing both the full Clinical Training Manual for a CBT Insomnia Program and the abridged but comprehensive version we reviewed in the training. Because the training covered so much information, I really felt ready and able to put what I learned into practice immediately.”
“I was extremely impressed with this CBT-I training. There is finally a practical and healthy method for patients to resolve or diminish their sleeping issues. I recommend this training to any professional who is open minded about the lack of necessity for medications to treat insomnia.”
"I recently attended Dr. Jacobs' CBT-I workshop and can say without reservation that it was excellent and surpassed all my expectations. He was extremely knowledgeable, and his teaching style was relaxed but very organized and thorough. I would recommend this training to anyone who is interested in treating patients with insomnia."
“The training was informative and thorough. Unlike some trainings that often fall short on treatment application, CBT for insomnia was geared towards providing practical strategies to share with patients. Dr. Jacobs provided everything needed to inform, assess, and treat people with insomnia in a clear and concise session by session protocol that is empirically based and clinically tested.”
“Not only was the class extremely informative, it kept my interest throughout (which is hard to do on any weekend course). We have already started structuring our program to include CBT-I. I feel completely comfortable starting CBT-I thanks to your detailed outlined materials and course topics you covered. I wouldn’t change a thing with your course it’s a great learning experience!”
“The training was rigorous, well presented and stimulating. I came away from the seminar feeling it was very effective and practical. The concepts and ideas presented are immediately applicable for use with patients.”
